You could say our brand was born from a challenge. Seven years ago, I wanted a pricey $100 serum. My partner, ever the problem-solver, gifted me a formulation class instead of the bottle. His thinking: "Give a girl a serum, her skin is good for a day. Teach her to formulate, and it's great for a lifetime." We spent the next few years as the designated skincare chefs for our family, but it was after my second pregnancy that our personal passion grew into something more. That’s when abelin came about.

I no longer recognized my own skin. It was breaking out constantly, and would flare up if I was nervous, had a glass of wine, ate anything with citrus, or even used certain skincare and hair products. The redness, irritation, and constant flare-ups were relentless. I started avoiding mirrors and dreaded turning on my camera for Zoom calls. It got so bad that I ended up taking six months off work just to cope.

.After finally seeing a dermatologist, I got an answer I wasn’t expecting: It wasn’t something internal. It was something I was putting on my skin. My skin barrier was completely compromised.

As formulators, we worked backwards from there. Our investigation led us to a surprising culprit responsible for compromising my skin barrier: preservatives. We realized that 99% of skincare products contain a high level of preservatives to keep them shelf-stable. Unfortunately, this can also damage your skin barrier, weakening it and making your skin more reactive, dry, and inflamed.

That’s why we created the Abelin Cleanser.

We built it in a concentrated form, so it stays fresh without needing a heavy load of preservatives. In fact, our cleanser uses up to 90% less preservative than traditional cleansers. Enriched with locally sourced natural ingredients high in vitamin and nutrients. Our clenaser is gentler, safer, and more skin-friendly than other cleansers. 

because it’s mixed at home in a refillable bottle, it also allows us to drastically reduce single-use plastic waste.
